Wearin’ of the Green
Did you know that in “Gone With the Wind,” a song is sung called “The Wearing of the Green”? It’s an Irish ballad from the Rebellion of 1798, and singing it in public – and/or the actual wearing of green – was punishable by hanging!
Part of the lyrics go:
I’ve heard a whisper of a land that lies beyond the sea
Where rich and poor stand equal in the light of Freedom’s day.
Ah, Erin, must we leave you, driven by a tyrant’s hand
Must we seek a mother’s blessing from a strange and distant land
Where the cruel cross of England shall never more be seen
And where, please God, we’ll live and die, still Wearing of the Green.
Will, you be wearin’ the green come Saint Patrick’s Day?
Relax, celebrate, embrace, laugh, cry tears of joy,
but whatever you do… don’t stress.
